NYC Police Arrest Bomb Plot Suspect
Posted Monday, November 21st, 2011 at 11:05 am VOA

Police in New York have arrested a man they say was plotting to attack post offices, police cars and soldiers returning from serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg told reporters Sunday 27-year-old Jose Pimentel was inspired by al-Qaida, but that he was working as a “lone wolf,” and not as part of a larger conspiracy.

The city's police commissioner, Raymond Kelly, said the suspect had already begun building three pipe bombs when police arrested him Saturday afternoon.

Prosecutors said at a hearing late Sunday that Pimentel was about an hour away from completing the explosive devices.

Pimentel has been charged with conspiring to build a bomb for terrorist purposes and possessing tools to wage a campaign of violence.

At a press conference late Sunday, Kelly said the suspect planned to test the bombs by planting them in mailboxes and detonating them. He said Pimentel hoped that once the bombing campaign started, the public “would know that there were mujahedeen in the city.”

China warns India: Foreign companies shouldn't engage in South China Sea

Updated: November 21, 2011 18:59 IST NDTV

Beijing/New Delhi: Days after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh told Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao that India was going ahead with an oil exploration pact with Vietnam in the South China Sea, Beijing has made its unhappiness clear.

China's foreign ministry spokesman Liu Weimin was asked today if the issue was raised in Dr Singh's meeting with Premier Wen at Bali. In his reply the spokesman said, "As for the discussion on the South China Sea issue, China has expounded its positions many times. We don't hope to see outside forces involved in the South China Sea dispute and do not want to see foreign companies to engage in activities that will undermine China's sovereignty and interests."

At his meeting with Premier Wen, in Bali, on Friday, the Indian Prime Minister had stood firm that India was going ahead with the oil exploration deal. Beijing has been upset since it claims these waters as its own and is engaged in a diplomatic row with several South East Asian nations.

Firing outside The White House...

Dear Friends,

As per our anticipation on Oct. 19, 2011 about a possible terror threat in Washington D.C., there are reports of firing outside The White House, A loaded AK-47 recovered from one vehicle used in the incident. The suspects are out of reach till now. Many parts of cities are closed after this incident.

Gunshots fired near White House
Published: November 12, 2011 The Express Tribune

WASHINGTON: Gunshots were fired near the White House on Friday night on Constitution Avenue in a confrontation between occupants in two vehicles, US federal law enforcement officers told The Washington Post.

After the incident, an abandoned vehicle, a rifle – possibly an AK-47 – and spent cartridges were recovered from the site, which is a few blocks away from the White House, near Roosevelt Bridge.

An incident of this nature is unlikely and rare in the vicinity.

Sergeant David Schlosser said:

The reason why this [the incident] is of interest is because of the location.

The incident caused panic and alerted the security officials, but in US Park police spokesman’s belief, the White House was possibly not the target.

Members of the Secret Service heard the gunshots a few minutes after 9 pm, the service told The Washington Post. The vehicle was recovered from a grassy area and a witness who was present there at the site informed the police that “someone ran from the vehicle towards the bridge.”

However, no injuries were reported in the incident. The authorities added that US President Barack Obama and the first lady were not present in the White House when the incident took place.

Fire halts Swedish nuclear reactor
MOSCOW, 15:49 23/10/2011 October 23 (RIA Novosti)

A nuclear reactor in the Swedish town of Oskarshamn was closed down on Saturday night after a fire broke out at the nuclear power plant, Sweden's newspaper Local reported on Sunday, referring to the plant's operator, OKG.

The fire broke out in the turbine hall of unit 2 and was quickly put out by the plant's own emergency services, after which the reactor and the turbine were closed down as a precautionary measure.

"Fires are always serious in this type of facility, but this happened in the conventional turbine hall and not in the reactor itself," said Anders Osterberg, OKG communications director.

Unit 2 was restarted this week following its annual maintenance check, the Local said.

The Oskarshamn nuclear plant is located on Sweden's south west coast, some 30 kilometers (19 miles) north of Oskarshamn. The plant's three reactors produce about 10 percent of the country's electricity.
